Rewritting History

Why so informational?!?!?! Well, I just got out of school (*makes many happy faces and a few screams*) and am officially on summer vacation! YEAH!! Along with summer means the beach, adventure and this year a special surprise (which, if you the reader, have been reading my last posts you will already know it!) To start things off, we're taking a detour off our usual trip. A side trip to revisit history.........

This year in 8th grade, our last unit in SS was the Civil War. It was my favorite unit!! After we had finished the unit I wanted to go visit some places. Battlefields, hospitals, slave hideouts, etc. I talked to Greentuna and Gramtuna and they said YES! GASP! OMG! So, early today (after a four hour of sleep recovery from the 8th grade dance "Night In The Spotlight") we headed off for our first stop.....Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania was one of the main places that important battle took place. Visiting it today, makes you have to imagine no roads, stores or fast food resteraunts. The main battle in Pennsylvania was the battle of Gettysburg.

HISTORY OF GETTYSBURG:

The battle of Gettysburg took place from July 1-3 in 1863. The battle was fought between Meade (Union) and Lee (Confederate). The first day of battle carried on, as men from both the Union and the Confederates were killed. The Union had large numbers compared to the Confederates, and after the first day of battle, lost over half their men. Lee's army was dying.
The second day of fighting was the bloodiest of the three days. Lee lost more men than Meade but continued to fight of the field. On the final day, the "High Water Mark" (the highest and most important point of the war was set) at Pickett's Charge. The Union needed a way to destroy the Confederates by surprise. As a battle plan, they halted thier cannons and gunfire making it seem like they were defeated. The Confederates bought it. Over 300,000 men marched across the field seperating the armies and crossed the picket fence (half way) and the stone wall (Unions front lines). The charge was not led by Pickett but was instead led by some...dude? As the Confederates got closer to the stone wall, the Union fired up their cannons and when they reached the wall itself opened fire. The Confederates had a MASSACRE!!!! Over 3/4 of their men were killed and the general leading them was shot (set high water mark). Afterwards, Lee surrendered to Meade and the Union had won the battle of Gettysburg!!

I KNOW! IT'S A LOT TO TAKE IN!
2morrow we begin our virtual tour and head to our second and third Civil War location

To find out what we will discover next, stay tuned for more adventures of America's great history. Ktuna would be proud.......
